Thursday Tips #7 by Dr Isha Snehal

Healthcare professionals often struggle with striking a work-life balance. Dr Isha Snehal shares 5 tips she follows to achieve the same! Read and share with those struggling with a similar issue!

  • Start the day with intention

Physicians’ roles are intense and take up a big chunk of our lives. Instead of getting sucked into the work-sleep-wake-up-repeat cycle, if we start our days with intention and mindfulness, we’ll remember why we started what we do, what we love. It will make us more connected and joyous with our routine work.

  • Develop a system of work; a daily routine

Often the notes are long and tedious, and a huge chunk of the work gets spent on scut work. If we start developing a system around our work and plan our time efficiently, it will give us more time off and lower our stress levels. For example, preparing a checklist, developing a way to review patient charts. Daily routines are powerful – sleep at the same time, wake up at the same time, journal, read something inspiring before starting your day sets a positive tone to the day.

  • Work out daily

Even though our lives are messy and busy, find time to work out and sweat out, even if it’s for 15 minutes. It increases endorphins, builds stamina and makes you feel happy. After all, since we are the health advocates for the world, we absolutely should walk the talk. Your health is the biggest wealth you’ll ever have.

  • Have a hobby and show interest in the world

We mostly love our jobs and our medical science. But there’s always that hobby that will rejuvenate us when we come back to practice. At the same time, it increases your skills towards something different from medicine. You’ll feel more connected to your work, and it won’t feel like a chore. Believe it or not, patients also love doctors who know about things other than medicine!

  • Spend time with the people you love

Whatever time you get, try to spend some of it with the people you love. That affection and warmth spills over to other parts of your life and grounds you! Even small gestures such as having one meal together, watching a favourite show together or simply talking about your day will make you and your loved ones feel good!
