The Surgical War

In a move that was sure to trigger a surgical war in the medical community, the Central Council of Indian Medicine(CCIM) allowed Ayurvedic post-graduate passouts to receive formal training in 39 surgical procedures mentioned in the gazette notification it released.

“The CCIM, with the previous sanction of the Central Government, hereby makes the following regulations further to amend the Indian Medicine Central Council (Post Graduate Ayurveda Education) Regulations, 2016,” said the gazette notification.

This can be seen as a re-emphasis of the current government on traditional medicine practices. However, this was met with a severe backlash from the allopathic medicine practitioners, as was expected. Two days ago, the IMA(Indian Medical Association) condemned this move by the government and called it a ‘retrograde step of mixing the systems’. The IMA has questioned whether the AYUSH discipline of medicine has its own anesthetic drugs, antibiotics, and other means of post-operative care that are essential and critical to performing modern surgical procedures.

IMA has requested CCIM to withdraw their notification that allowed Ayurveda doctors to practice surgery. The IMA’s statement issued two days back also has mentioned the list of surgeries that Ayurveda doctors are now allowed to perform actually fall under the authority and jurisdiction of modern medicinal practice.
