It’s Time!

Every year, World Tuberculosis Day is observed on 24th March to raise awareness about the health, social and economic effects in order to end the global tuberculosis epidemic. The theme of this year – ‘It’s Time‘ represents the urgency required by the global leaders to act on the commitment given to stop the deadly paws of this disease. In order to do so, the world needs to:

  • Improve access to prevention and treatment of TB
  • Promote people-centred and rights-based TB response
  • Improve and ensure sustainable financing for fighting the disease and accelerate research in the field
  • Create awareness and educate people in order to end the social stigma associated with the disease
  • Build accountability

With the recent advent of Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis(MDRT), treating TB has become a new challenge as the bacteria are now resistant to the firth-line of drugs used such as Rifampicin. Another challenge in the elimination of TB is the presence of latent TB cases. Did you know that every 1 in 4 people has latent TB? There is a significant rise in latent TB cases due to self-medication, failure to get tested and non-compliance with the TB treatment prescribed for patients with the condition.

Much research is needed to beat the new-age TB! Wake up before TB does!
