Concerns about the NEXT Pattern ?

The Recent concern of  medical students and parents in Karnataka about the implementation of the National Exit Test (NEXT). The NEXT is a new medical licensing exam that will be introduced by the National Medical Commission (NMC) in 2024. Students who are currently in their final year of MBBS will be the first to take the exam.

The students and parents are concerned about the following aspects of the NEXT:

  • The exam is being introduced too soon, without giving students enough time to prepare.
  • The exam is too long and complex, and it will be difficult for students to pass it.
  • The exam is not aligned with the current MBBS curriculum, and it will not accurately assess students’ knowledge and skills.

The students and parents are demanding that the implementation of the NEXT be postponed until 2025, so that students have more time to prepare and the exam can be better aligned with the MBBS curriculum.

The NMC has not yet responded to the students’ and parents’ concerns. However, the NMC has said that the NEXT is necessary to improve the quality of medical education in India. The NMC believes that the NEXT will be a more rigorous and fair assessment of students’ knowledge and skills than the current licensing exams.

It remains to be seen whether the NMC will agree to postpone the implementation of the NEXT. However, the concerns of the students and parents are valid, and the NMC should take them into account before making a decision.

Thoughts on the matter:

  • The NEXT is a significant change to the way that medical students are assessed in India. It is important to give students enough time to prepare for the exam and to make sure that the exam is fair and accurate.
  • The NMC should be transparent about the reasons for introducing the NEXT and how it will improve the quality of medical education in India.
  • The students and parents have a right to be heard and their concerns should be addressed. The NMC should engage with the students and parents to find a solution that is acceptable to everyone.
