Coasting Along! Fun facts about Coconuts

2+

A coconut is not actually a nut. It is a stone fruit.

There are more than 1300 types of coconuts,  but all of them can be traced to one of two genetic origins, either from the Pacific or Indian Ocean.

Coconuts can float long distances across oceans and still put down roots when washed ashore. There are reports of individual coconuts even reaching Scandinavia.

The shell of the coconut can be used to make charcoal, which is a fuel.

The coconut tree can live for over 100 years.
