Faust also identified that ChatGPT confabulated fake research paper to support its statement that, costochondritis — a common cause of chest pain — can be caused by oral contraceptive pills. The risk of misinformation is even greater for patients, who might use ChatGPT to research their symptoms, as many currently do with Google and other search engines.

Potential for bias- When a user asked ChatGPT to generate computer code to check if a person would be a good scientist based on their race and gender, the program defined a good scientist as being a ‘white male’. Such biases due to limited dataset, definitely would perpetuate stigma and discrimination within health care.
  3. No Bedside Manner: When it comes to empathy, ChatGPT falls flat. It may provide accurate medical information, but lacks the physician’s comforting words or a gentle touch, which is a necessary part in healing.
  4. Language Lost in Translation: ChatGPT may struggle with medical jargon or complex explanations. It could turn your doctor-patient conversation into a confusing mishmash of technical terms and pop culture references. Imagine being told you have “acute Jar Jar Binks syndrome” instead of explaining it in a simple straightforward way.

Recently, in March 2023, ICMR enlisted the ‘Ethical Guidelines for application of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare, it acknowledges the acceptable uses of ChatGPT across medical education and administrative tasks, but emphasizes that it cannot endorse the program’s use for clinical purposes — at least in its current form. ICMR votes for enough trials, evaluation, and innovation by introducing human moderation at each step using HITL (Human In The Loop) technology to prevent any probable harms of AI.

ChatGPT and AI are definitely here to stay; we should embrace it with careful consideration, ensuring ethical implementation, only meant to assist, rather than it using us as a fleshy counterpart.
