Greetings from Townsville: Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef!

2+

I am Janani, a pediatric surgeon, a doting mum to a 6-year-old son and a wife to an outrageously lucky intensivist husband.

We live in the gorgeous tropical northeast Queensland- a city called Townsville. If you have heard anyone call it Brownsville, I assure you, it is not with a racist intonation.

Townsville itself has a population of around 200,000 people and is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. It is a coastal town housing the Australian Army and the quaternary care hospital of North Queensland and home to the Cowboys  NRL team. It is important to know that the north east Queensland is home to crocodiles, snakes, jellyfish , Irukandji, sharks and everything nice.

As a pediatric surgeon servicing a geographical area of over 80,000sqkm  with a large indigenous population, I have the opportunity to serve a community with varied healthcare needs. Pediatric burn and trauma management forms an integral part of pediatric surgical services apart from subspecialty pediatric surgery. I also provide outreach services to Cairns to service up to the north-eastern tip of Australia.

My areas of interest and expertise include pediatric urology, advanced minimal access surgery apart, neonatal surgery and everything in Pediatric Surgery.
