Spina Bifida is a preventable Birth defect of the Spinal Cord that affects more than 25000 pregnancies in India each year. It causes childhood Paralysis worse than polio. Folic Acid taken before conception prevents Spina Bifida.

On this World Spina Bifida Day, let us spread awareness about preventing this serious birth defect.

Spina Bifida is a congenital condition that affects the spinal cord and the bones of the spine. It occurs when the neural tube, which normally develops into the spinal cord and spine during early pregnancy, doesn’t close properly. As a result, the spinal cord and nerves may be exposed or damaged.

There are different types and severities of Spina Bifida, including:

  1. Myelomeningocele: This is the most severe form, where the spinal cord and nerves are exposed through an opening in the spine. It often leads to paralysis and other complications.
  2. Meningocele: In this form, the protective covering of the spinal cord (meninges) protrudes through the spinal opening, but the spinal cord itself is not damaged. It is generally less severe than myelomeningocele.
  3. Spina Bifida Occulta: This is the mildest form and may not even be noticeable. In this condition, there is a small gap in the spine, but the spinal cord and nerves are not exposed. It’s often diagnosed incidentally and may not cause any symptoms.

Individuals with Spina Bifida may face various challenges and may require medical and surgical interventions, physical therapy, and assistive devices to manage the condition. The severity of the condition can vary widely, and many people with Spina Bifida lead fulfilling lives with appropriate support and care.
