26 New Medical Colleges Approved by the Central Government

The Government of India has recently approved the proposal to set up 26 new medical colleges in 6 different states/UT. These colleges will be attached to the existing district or government hospitals and will be set up under the Central Sponsored Scheme or CSS. This information was shared by the Minister of State Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in the Lok Sabha.

The medical colleges that are approved to be set up under the phase III of CSS scheme are approved for the states of J&K, Ladakh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. Once these colleges will be set up, Rajasthan will become the first Indian state to have atleast one government medical college in each district. Many more colleges were approved to be set up in the first two phases of the CSS but there are some states like Odisha, which have a dearth of good government medical colleges and hospitals but haven’t yet received any approval for setting up medical colleges in a few districts.

The Government of India aims to set up 75 more new medical colleges by 2022-2023 for which the centre has asked the various states and UTs to send in their proposals as per the scheme guidelines. This proactive move by the central government might help solve the severe shortage of healthcare professionals like doctors in India, hopefully, in the next decade!
