World AIDS Day

While the world is grappling with a notorious virus, many such viruses shook the healthcare structures of the world in the past. One such virus is the Human Immunodeficiency Virus(HIV) that causes AIDS. 1st December is observed as World Aids Day each year. First observed in 1988, did you know that World Aids Day was the first-ever international health day observed?

Though we have made immense progress in tackling the disease, HIV continues to be an epidemic and a major health issue. More so today, during the ongoing covid pandemic, there are additional challenges in managing the disease. This year’s World AIDS Day, WHO joins hands with partners and organizations that have been incessantly working to provide HIV services and care. The WHO also calls out to all global leaders and citizens of the world to show ‘global solidarity’ to ensure HIV services continue to be provided during the COVID-19 pandemic and after.

This year 2020 is also the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, and WHO has accelerated for protection and support of healthcare workers who have worked on the frontlines to eradicate HIV, increase awareness and provide services to patients with the disease.

This World AIDS Day, let us all pledge to make this world a safer, healthier world.
